Visual Communications

In his Visual Communications course, Paul Wang (SCS, Design Management & Communications) uses Miro boards for a range of activities. For a visual group project, students collaborate using a Miro board to display their initial designs, and critique designs posted by other groups in the form of ‘sticky notes’.

In her LDES eLearning Development course, Laura March (Learning, Design, and Technology) has found Zoom whiteboards to be a useful collaborative tool for engaging with students, whether they're attending in person or online. During the first class meeting, Laura used a whiteboard to help connect the dots between class content and potential job opportunities. Students used virtual "sticky notes" to fill out four columns: (1) links to job postings that piqued their interest, (2) skills they already possessed that were mentioned in those postings, (3) skills they'd need to develop further to be competitive candidates, and (4) how the specific content and assignments described in the syllabus could bolster their job prospects.

Later, Laura set up a separate whiteboard for discussing assigned readings. Students used the board to highlight their favorite passages or key takeaways from each article at the top and jot down any specific questions they had underneath. They then used those highlights and questions as jumping-off points for a deeper group discussion. For Laura, it was a great way to collaboratively analyze the readings in real-time, regardless of whether students were sitting in the classroom or joining remotely.
