Workshop requirements

To complete the workshop requirements, participants in the AT program are required to:

Note: As of fall 2023, completing an AT workshop no longer involves any Canvas work. We may provide resources that you can find in our Canvas course, but you do not need to complete any Canvas tasks to complete the workshop; you just need to attend the 90-minute workshop and actively engage with the activities of the workshop throughout that 90 minutes.

Core workshops

Core workshops are offered every semester and are described on the Schedule page. To register, please see the Schedule page.

Elective workshops

Elective CNDLS workshops vary by semester. We have offered a wide variety of these workshops and do our best to offer timely workshops tailored to our current participants. Most of these elective workshops are single sessions, but our SoTL Club, where participants discuss recent scholarship of teaching and learning, consists of two sessions each semester, and participants need to attend both. (Note: This is new in fall 2024; in previous semesters we had a four-session Book Club, and participants had to attend at least 3 of 4 sessions.) To view and/or register for current elective offerings, please see the Schedule page.

Teaching Portfolio

Participants in the AT program must submit six Teaching Portfolio elements to complete the program, including the four required element plus two electives of your choosing. Each element is associated with a respective workshop. What that means is that it can be helpful to attend the workshop before working on the associated Portfolio element. That said, it’s not required; you can work on any Portfolio element you want, whether you’ve attended te relevant workshop or not.

For each element, you must submit the proper documentation via email to atprogram@georgetown.edu. The instructions for each Teaching Portfolio element are linked below.

Please note that you may only submit one General Reflection on an Elective Workshop for credit. Even though two elective workshops are required for program completion, we will only accept one General Reflection elective element. Your two elective elements must be different from each other.

Policies

  1. Both for pedagogical reasons and reasons of respecting other workshop participants, you are required to attend the whole 90-minute workshop to receive credit. If you arrive significantly late and/or leave significantly early, you will not receive credit for the workshop. When the workshop is on Zoom, you need to be actively participating (i.e., not just streaming the workshop in the background) in order to receive credit.
  2. Because of the number and variety of requirements and the importance of sustained engagement and practice, participants must spend at least two semesters participating if they plan to complete the program; it is recommended that students begin two years or at least three semesters before their intended graduation.

Though not a policy, please note that, while AT Program workshops are open to faculty, they are designed for graduate students. Presentations and many of the exercises are designed for instructors with relatively little teaching experience. Some workshops are more appropriate than others for those with more teaching experience. Faculty with a particular interest in one of the AT workshops should contact David Ebenbach before registering.

Deadlines

One of the few firm deadlines in the AT Program applies to graduating students. If you are graduating, please be sure you’ve informed us of your graduation date and make every effort to submit Teaching Portfolio materials well in advance of your graduation date and no later than the CNDLS review deadline below.

These deadlines are only for participants who are graduating in December or May respectively; they ensure that we have time to review and solicit revisions when necessary prior to a participant’s graduation. If you do not plan to graduate during the current semester, then the semester submission deadlines do not apply to you.
