Why Use StoryMaps?

ArcGIS StoryMaps is a versatile digital storytelling tool that can be used in a variety of ways in both teaching and learning. It can be used across disciplines to teach content using multimedia, and can be used when assigning digital assignments that help students practice writing for a public audience, technological skills, research, storytelling, communication, and critical and spatial thinking.

What Can I Do With It?

Create immersive long form narratives with embedded media (e.g., audio, images, video, music) in conjunction with maps. Faculty can create content for teaching using StoryMaps, or incorporate the tool into assignments for students to use. Students can work on a StoryMap individually, in small groups, or as a whole class. It can be shared with small groups of students, with the entire University, or with the public.

History

Professors Chandra Manning and Professor Mireya Loza each asked their students to use StoryMaps to tell stories of communities. See examples here.

Journalism

Professor Ann Oldenburg’s students focus on telling stories of those who are disenfranchised, marginalized or oppressed.

As a member of the Georgetown community, StoryMaps is free to use if you sign in with your Net ID and password, and free training workshops are available each semester through the Library.
