For her introductory intensive Italian course, Dr. Fulvia Musti hoped to move beyond the typical listening comprehension activities based on audio-taped dialogues and textbook exercises. She turned to CNDLS to help her integrate authentic sources and cultural stimuli in the classroom.
The CNDLS team suggested a multi-faceted approach. First, they helped Prof. Musti generate an online multimedia environment, using technologies such as Blackboard and online audio files. Students were able to interact organically with the oral language, while Blackboard allowed them to work on the course content outside of the classroom. Essentially, Prof. Musti's new approach has created a dynamic, portable language lab.
Dr. Musti feels the process helped her become more sensitive to her students' needs. As a result of the new resources available to them, students engage more in class activities and show a deeper appreciation of the Italian language and culture. Immersion in the virtual cultural environment enhances their interaction with the language.
