GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software can be used to map, manipulate,
or analyze any data that have a spatial component. This decision-making tool allows
users to visualize information in ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and
trends.
GIS software ranges in complexity from simple map display programs to
powerful data extraction, manipulation, and analysis capabilities in full-scale
GIS systems.
Support for GIS software and research projects on campus is provided through
Lauinger Library. The Lauinger Library Government Documents and Microforms Department
has two workstations loaded with the ArcView GIS software program and a color
printer for producing maps. Georgetown University faculty may also borrow a copy
of the ArcView software. The ArcView site license includes a Virtual Classroom
component, which offers self-paced, interactive, hands-on classes along with instructional
support.
Individual instruction sessions, consultation on the development and support
of GIS research, classroom demonstrations, and virtual classes can be arranged
by contacting Timothy
Cash in the Government Documents and Microforms Department.
