Institutional Review
Board and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
PURPOSE AND USES FOR
THIS KIT: This resource kit provides a set of flexible tools and resources that may be adapted for local use in faculty discussions about the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) and institutional review boards for human subject research. Recent abuses of research involving human subjects which resulted in
unreported dangers in health research and subsequent deaths have caused
the academy to renew its vigilance on this important topic. Due to this
renewed focus, many faculty involved in the VKP may find that they must
bring their classroom research projects before their local Institutional
Review Board. This kit offers resources for faculty who need to obtain
IRB review or exemption by offering some accounts of the experiences of
VKP members with the IRB process at their own school and also offers links
to forms and IRB websites on local VKP campuses. You may navigate this resource kit in two ways: We have listed the various resources--such as model consent forms, links to various University IRB applications, exemption forms, etc.--in the Resources list. These resources can assist VKP working groups in supporting the work of their primary researchers. You may choose to read the experiences in order, by clicking on the Experiences link.
